Dave Byrd's interest in
racing came at an early age when he used to go watch his uncle
Johnny Brazil race Super Modifieds at the old San Jose Speedway
and at Stockton 99 Speedway in
the late 1960s.
Dave began his racing career
in 1977 at San Jose Speedway. He won his first track
championship that same year at the age of 18. Since that time,
Dave has accumulated over 350 NASCAR feature wins on both-dirt
and pavement race tracks, 16 driving championships, including several
state titles, and the prestigious NASCAR Pacific Coast
Regional Championship. In the popularity department, he was
selected Driver of the Year by the Motor Press Association
twice, and he has been voted most popular driver by the racing
fans for most of his career.
Since the mid 1990s Dave has
dominated the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, and has driven in
select Touring Series events.
In 1994, Dave won both the
Stockton 99 Speedway Track Championship (pavement track), and
the Watsonville Speedway Track Championship (dirt track),
along with winning 18 feature events.
In 1995, Dave amazed the
racing community as he again won two championships, one at
Altamont Raceway Park (pavement track) and the other at
Watsonville Speedway (dirt track).
In 1996, Dave returned to the
Stockton 99 Speedway. During his campaign he won eight feature
events. His success enabled him to easily win his second track
championship at Stockton 99 Speedway in three years.
In 1997, Dave made the move
from weekly racing to new NASCAR Mega Power Challenge Touring Series.
Dave dominated the tour by winning the first five events. He
easily captured the series title by winning seven out of the
ten events. Dave also won the 1997 Tri-Holiday Classic series
at Stockton 99 Speedway by winning two out of the three
events.
In 1999, Dave was injured in
a fiery crash during a NASCAR Southwest Series event at the
one mile Phoenix International Raceway (PIR).
He decided to take a couple of years off to recover and enjoy life.
In 2002, Dave raced in
multiple series which included NASCAR Weekly Racing Series,
NASCAR Southwest Series, Ultra Wheels Super Truck Series, and
Grand American Modified races on dirt. In all he completed in
30 events and WON 15 of them. His average finish for the year
was third. Dave’s highlight for the year was winning the IMCA
"Duel in the Desert" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
In 2003, Dave raced a limited
schedule that included events in the SRL Wild West Shootout
touring series, which allowed him to focus on the NASCAR
Southwest Series road course event. The plan paid off as Dave
beat out several Winston Cup stars in route to finishing
sixth; his best finish ever on the famed road course.
In 2004, Dave focused on the
NASCAR Weekly Series at Stockton 99 Speedway; which enabled
him to easily walk away with his third Championship at the
facility.
In 2005, after taking most of
the year off, Dave easily won the two Late Model Open Shows
held at Altamont and Madera speedways.
In 2006, Dave returned to
full time competition, winning 14 feature events, easily
taking home the Altamont Motorsports Park Championship and fourth
place in the prestigious NASCAR Division II Championship. The
highlight of the year came at Stockton 99 Speedway when Dave
won a special 100 lap race that included a commemorative
trophy that paid tribute to the infamous speedways history.
The special trophy was built upon a historic trophy originally
won by none other than Dave's own Uncle Johnny Brazil!
In 2007, Dave returned full
time to the Stockcar Racing League's Wild West Late Model Shootout
Touring Series and part time in other series as the schedule allowed.
Dave won three races for the year and capped the return to the
SRL series by winning his 16th driving championship!
For 2008, Dave returns to the
newly renamed Flashco Southwest Tour Series with the full
intension of defending his championship title! |
